Tone and messaging of META redundancy announcement should be condemned by Minister says FSU
13 February 2025
Redundancy law in Ireland should be respected and adhered to by META
The Financial Services Union have condemned the announcement by META of significant job cuts and described the tone and messaging contained in the announcement as disrespectful and something that should not be tolerated.
META have announced they will lay off 5% of its lowest performing “ staff globally but have failed to put a number on the job cuts expected in Ireland.
Commenting on the announcement Gareth Murphy Head of Industrial Relations and Campaigns of the FSU said:
The comments from the CEO of META that he would move out “ low performers “ is disrespectful to hard working staff and certainly goes against the spirit if not the redundancy law in this Country.
We all expect to be treated with respect in the workplace. This is not too much to ask from a decent employer. The comments from META CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, are not acceptable, and the Minister for Enterprise should inform him that we expect better.
The Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment should also inform us if his Department received written notice from META about this collective redundancy.
Unfortunately, this action once again brings our outdated industrial relations laws under scrutiny. Together with the Communications Workers Union, Mandate and SIPTU, the FSU have formed the Respect At Work campaign which is aimed at generating support for new legislation to support unions and workers in organising their workplace without fear of discrimination or victimisation.
Eighty-Nine current TDS supported the Respect at Work campaigns general election pledge on this and we call on them to work together so announcements like will not be tolerated in the future.
The FSU will be holding a confidential freephone helpline for workers in META on Friday from 9.30am to 4.30am
