Sharon McAuley elected President of the FSU

14 May 2018

Sharon McAuley was unanimously elected President of the Financial Services Union at our conference in Limerick on Saturday.

Sharon, who had previously served as Honorary Finance Officer, took over at the helm of the Union from Tommy Kennedy.

Speaking to conference following her election Sharon set out an ambitious agenda for her term as President and for the future of the FSU.

“It is one of the proudest moments of my professional life to assume the role of President of the Financial Services Union.  I firmly believe that there has never been a more important time for workers in the sector to have a progressive, professional trade union to represent their interests.

“Workers in our sector aren’t fearful of change.  We want to have challenging careers in a thriving part of the economy.  However, change cannot be the cloak used to erode decent standards of pay, good terms & conditions of employment or other hard won rights.

“That is why staff in the banking and financial services sector need a strong, progressive union.  At our best we can have a real influence on how our industry develops.  We can ensure that talented, engaged staff are at the heart of successful companies in our sector.  We can shape the future, not just react to it.

“Colleagues, my promise to you is simple:  In this new era, under a refocused organisation, I will work even harder to deliver for FSU members, and people who should be our members.  We will evolve swiftly into a Union to be even prouder of, and one which delivers a first class, quality service that is both relevant, compelling and above all wins for our members and their families.  Together we can do this.

Sharon is a native of Belfast and has worked with AIB since 1979.  A trade union member since the start of her career,  Sharon was first elected to the AIB Sector Committee  and the Union’s General Council in 1995.   Sharon served as Honorary Finance Officer from 2011 to May 2018.

Aside from her Union activities Sharon enjoys travelling, European and American history and minding her daughter’s dog Stanley.
