Artificial intelligence policy - BOI 10/25 - BOI Group

04 March 2025

BOI 10/25

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is now widely used across the finance sector in a variety of ways and has continued to proliferate into almost every aspect of our industry. Finance companies are also actively exploring increasing uses of Artificial intelligence, and we expect to see an exponential increase in the adoption of these technologies in the near future. Therefore, it was a priority to get ahead of this rapidly emerging threat to ensure job security at Bank of Ireland.

The policy aligns with the declaration on AI agreed by the European Social Partners in Banking last year.  Among other elements, this recognises that the human-in-control is a vital component in AI processes and systems, and that colleagues will benefit from upskilling as technology develops.

To view the associated policy we have secured, please click the following link:

https://www.fsunion.org/assets/files/pdf/boi_fsu_ai_agreement.pdf, but below are the key items:

  • Human centric approach to AI use – human in command principle. This means machines remain machines and colleagues always maintain control.

  • Inform and consult regularly with Union on AI, colleagues will now have a voice on the implementation, development and use of AI.

  • Any material impacts negotiated through our collective bargaining procedures. The threat of AI will be managed in line with our existing agreements with the Bank and ensuring job security.

  • Prioritise training and reskilling for long term job security. Ensuring colleagues are properly consulted as the use of AI proliferates.

With the mention of potential job losses for BOI over the next three years.  We will keep working in your best interests.
